OBJECTIVES

  • Promotion of physical activity as a component of healthful lifestyles.

  • Improvement of the levels of health through the application of programs of health education.

  • Validation of instruments for the assessment of behavioral aspects related to physical and sport activities, health and quality of life.

ACTIVITIES

The research group on Exercise, health and quality of life is made up of researchers from different background, including psychologists, physicians and professionals of physical activity and sports, that come from the Department of Physical Education and the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leon, Spain. The research activity of the group is associated to its academic work, through the participation in the Doctorate Program  i"Sciences of the Physical Activity and Sport Sciences" of the University of Leon, with Mention of Excellence of the Spanish Ministry of Education.

A landmark in the brief history of the group has been the creation of the Laboratory of Physical Activity and Sports Psychology, located in the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. Research lines are fundamentally centered in the following areas: reasons for the practice and withdrawal from physical-activity and sports, relationship between anxiety, stress and recovery in sport activities,  psychological benefits of physical activity, or relation between physical activities, health and quality of life. In a series series of studies, motives for sport participation have been identified, as well as their relation to dropout reasons or interaction with perceived physical ability and motivational climate, both in physical education classes and in competitive sports. Investigations have been also performed on motor development of school students and its relation with levels of physical activity. Emotional changes induced by fitness programs or Spanish adaptation of questionnaires for the assessment of habitual physical activity levels and its relation with subjective well-being, health and quality of life, are other lines of research. Finally, diverse psychological effects of physical activity in special populations (elderly, adolescents ...) have been analyzed. All this activity is being possible thanks to the financial support from  public sources such as the Spanish High Sports Council, the Spanish Ministry of Social Services, the regional government of Castilla y León or different pharmaceutical companies.

The group maintains a fruitful exchange and cooperation with different research groups from European (Portugal) and South American (Brazil, Colombia) countries.
